Friends of the River San Bernard Ranger program was held on Thursday, April 18 at Sweeny Elementary in Sweeny, Texas. The educational program was presented to 121 fifth grade science students of teachers Garland Johnson and Camille Johse.

Facts presented about the San Bernard River Watershed helped students become aware of the environmental concerns. Points-of-interest along the river were identified on a map. A packet containing a FOR watershed booklet and additional river information was given to each student to take with them.

FOR Ranger committee members presenting this program were Adalia and Valroy Maudlin, Mike Goodson, Bob Bailey, Ken and Linda Wright

<<  Standing below the Sweeny ISD mascot Bulldog are the six winners of FOR Ranger rod and reels. The names of these lucky fifth grade science students were drawn at the end of the program in each class. Mr. P. Rabbit didn’t have to schedule a ride with Uber to get to the FOR Community Center for the start of the annual FOR Easter “Race for the Eggs” on Sat Apr 20th. Instead he arrived by water taxi chauffeured by Bob Bailey where a crowd of excited children waited for him.

Over a thousand eggs, filled with candy and some special ones that held money, were quickly gathered up and placed in baskets. This is a free event hosted by Friends of the River San Bernard and paid for by donations to the FOR organization at the October fundraiser. Chairmen of the event this year were Wayne and Vicki Head.

Note, this is a spoiler alert (don’t let your kids read this), there was a human being in the bunny costume. The name of the person who wore the bunny suit is Shane Davenport and his son Brayden was riding in the boat with him. Thanks Shane!

April Water Quality Test on San Bernard
Posted on Apr 11th, 2019 Comments (0)

H-GAC Texas Stream Team volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan, using a test kit, measure the physical and chemical parameters of San Bernard River at two locations. Valroy tests off his pier at CR 496, 1.6 miles upstream from the Churchill BridgeTim tests off his dock at Rio Vista, 4.5 miles downstream from the Churchill Bridge. Both tests are done on the same day at the same time each month.

The test reports the pH level, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and turbidity of the water. Two forms are shown for comparison as the data collected from the two locations can vary.

Please note, the bacterium enteroccocus test has been cancelled after two years of testing.

Want to jet ski, or boat in TX? It’s the law (Water Safety Act) that a person who is born on or after September 1, 1993 may NOT operate a boat on public waterways of Texas without supervision unless he or she has passed a Texas Boater Education Course and is greater than 13 yrs of age. This includes the following vessels - a powerboat powered by a motor of more than 15 horsepower, a personal watercraft or a windblown vessel over 14 feet in length.

Boating courses are taught by US Coast Guard Auxiliary, US Power Squadron and trained volunteer instructors, as well as teachers, and game wardens. With more and more people enjoying the lakes and rivers every year, it's important, for everyone, that boaters educate themselves on boating skills and seamanship. All classes are a minimum of six hours. More questions? Check the FAQ page

Class fee is an online payment for $35 and includes the Texas Safe Boating card cost to Texas Parks & Wildlife for those passing the USCG Aux test at the end of class. Lunch is included.

>>> Use this link for PRE-REGISTRATION required for private FOR San Bernard class on Sat May 11th. Please go to the site and complete both the registration link as well as the pay online link. Lunch is included with your $35 payment.
