FOR Gardening Program Held
Posted on Aug 11th, 2019

Texas Master Gardner Jim Hillis introduced the rock stars of the plant world - the Texas Superstars to twenty-seven green thumb gardeners at the Sat. Aug 10th gardening program. These plants have earned this designation by undergoing years of Texas A&M research field trials. These “Superstars” receive minimal water and soil preparation and no pesticides. A few notables are the Lady Bird Johnson Royal Blue Bluebonnet, the Laura Bush Petunia, Princess Caroline Napier Grass, Grandma’s Yellow Rose and the Lord Baltimore Hibiscus.

Texas Master Gardener Frank Curl explained how it’s possible to grow an abundance of plants in just six inches of special soil placed in a raised bed that’s been divided into one-foot squares. It’s called Square Foot Gardening and sounds incredible. Compared to a conventional single-row garden it grows 100% of the harvest in 20% of the space, applying 10% of the water, in 5% of the soil, using 2% of the work, with 0% of the weeds.
