June Water Quality Test on San Bernard
Posted on Jul 3rd, 2015
Valroy Mauldin, FOR Director and citizen scientist monitor takes water samples each month midway between the FM 521 bridge and the FM 2611 bridge for the Texas Stream Team program. "Measurements, Comments and Field Observations" for June: River level has been high, close or over the bulkhead for almost a month but is now normal. Water is still turbid and fresh (cond, 0.29 ms). Delayed sampling for 2 weeks. Did see Mullet jumping today. >View June's report >View past year's reports
- Note about bacteria levels occuring on the San Bernard River:
Houston-Galveston Area Council's (H-GAC) monitoring site at East Bernard on US Hwy 90 reports the worst bacteria level on the river is located here. This area is largely a rural agricultural area in the watershed with runoff from farm animals. It is approximately 50 miles upriver from Hanson County Riverside Park on Hwy 35. The tidal water from the Gulf flows to the salt water dam just beyond the park where it mixs with the fresh water and becomes brackish. Please note that bacteria does not survive well in salt water and this is where most of the water recreational activities take place closer to the Gulf.
