F.O.R. Hosts River Retreat for Wounded Heroes
Posted on Jul 25th, 2011
Friends of the River (F.O.R.) San Bernard is hosting a weekend retreat for a group of wounded soldiers from “Hunts for Heroes”, an organization dedicated to providing quality hunting and outdoor related activities for men and women who have been wounded on the field of battle in service to our country in the war against terrorism.
On Friday, September 16, 2011, a group of soldiers (number still to be determined) and their families and caretakers will be escorted through Bay City, West Columbia and Brazoria by the Matagorda County Cavalry and the Brazoria County Cavalry. Following this, a supper will be served to the group and their volunteer hosts at the F.O.R. Community Center on the San Bernard. Music and a sing-a-long will be provided. Each host family will take their soldier and family/caretaker home for a stay of two nights.

On Saturday, after breakfast, lunch and river activities, the soldiers will gather at the Poole Ranch on the San Bernard to enjoy a buckaroo supper and Tommy Worrell’s “Lil Bit of Texas” event. For those who wish to attend but are not part of the host families, the cost is $15.
The soldiers return to the F.O.R. Community Center on Sunday morning for breakfast prepared by the Brazoria Lions Club and then departure back to San Antonio.
If you care to volunteer as a host family who lives on the San Bernard, or if you want to donate your time or money to F.O.R.’s “Hunt for Heroes” weekend retreat, please contact Wayne and Vicki Head at wayne@sanbernardriver.com. A schedule of times will be posted on the website closer to the event date.
Information for donating to “Hunts for Heroes” can be found at their website huntsforheroes.com/donations.html.
F.O.R. thanks you in advance for your support of our injured veterans of war.
