The San Bernard River is important to both Brazoria County residents and visitors, as it provides both an economic and cultural benefit to our Community. With funding provided by the Restore Act, through TCEQ, Brazoria County proceeded with a project to dredge the mouth of the San Bernard River. This project started in the Summer of 2021 and was completed in Spring of 2022. The project has since seen significant sediment inflow in several sections that have already been dredged. This significant sediment inflow is directly related to the lack of flow from the San Bernard watershed due to the lack of rain. As of June 21st, 2022, the total rainfall within the watershed of the San Bernard River has been just over 6” this year. This is well below average and has led to low flow volumes for the river at the mouth. Without a considerable increase in flow, sedimentation of the mouth will continue.
Brazoria County has begun revising the permit with the Corp of Engineers, based on a modified design, allowing the County to work towards a maintenance dredge cycle using the remaining funds available through the Restore Act. This process is underway, and the County will provide regular updates as the project advances in the future.
