Ready for the trip, the four boys on the right are Boy Scouts representing Troop 413 - Alvin, Troop 483 - Manvel, and Troop 442 - Friendswood. Carlos Armintor, trek guide and Chanze Aguilera, Scout Master stand on the left. Could that possibly be a snake crawling from under the canoe in the lower right hand corner of the photo?

As part of Camp Karankawa’s Summer Adventure Camp, four Boy Scouts and two guides spent four days and three nights canoeing and overnight camping on the San Bernard River. Camp Karankawa is located just west of West Columbia in Sweeny, Texas and is a scouting program for the Bay Area Council (BAC), Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Leaving upriver by canoe from Camp Karankawa, the first challenge was portaging around the still rapidly flowing salt water dam located three miles down river. Carrying the 50 lb water containers, plus canoes and equipment through the rugged growth along the riverbank was a true test of the trip.

First night’s camping was at Hanson Riverside County Park. Second night was spent at the FOR Community Center. The scouts took advantage of the picnic tables to enjoy their evening meal of freeze-dried food. The last night will be spent on the beach at Wolf Island at the mouth of the river.
