Using his self-steering “wind vane” ears, Brownie signals to steer a course of 270º so he can view the sunset.
Here’s what I do best––babysit!
Someone said I was a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Curly Coated Retriever and that made me a Lab Coat Retriever. I didn’t find it funny at all.

Brownie is a Chocolate Lab owned by Bob Bailey, F.O.R. Treasurer. Bob says, “Brownie found me in June, 2004. I was retiring at the end of the month so my endless traveling had stopped and I was working from home. I would (and still do) walk the neighborhood each morning and sometimes had up to six dogs join me. A scrawny, beat-up chocolate lab showed up one morning and joined the group, but when I got home, he decided not to leave with the others. Eventually, he would leave, but rejoin me the next day. This went on for a week and my neighbors and I tried to find out where he came from. We put up signs, put an ad in the newspaper, etc., but apparently he had been “dumped”. After trying to get one of the neighbors to adopt him, we decided to take him to the vet to be checked out to see if we would keep him. The vet said it looked like “we both got lucky”, that he was about a year old, and except for being hungry and some minor cuts, he was in good shape. Several of my grandkids were at the house that day and quickly named him “Brownie” – how original! That was six years ago and we still take the morning walk! His favorite pastimes are our morning walks and riding in my boat where he sits on the front seat like he’s the captain! In the winter he’ll sit next to me behind the windshield to stay warm. He loves it when I catch fish, since he gets some sushi while I clean the catch! |
