FOR 2024 Scholarship Winners

Six 2024 high school graduates were awarded $2,000 scholarships from Friends of the River (FOR) San Bernard. Many applications were received this year from the high schools in our watershed. Scholarship recipients will receive $1,000 for the first semester and $1,000 for the second semester to help cover actual college tuition and book expense during their freshman year. The academic, extracurricular, volunteer and environmental stewardship credentials presented by the students were truly outstanding and made for a very competitive selection process.
Chairman of the FOR Scholarship Committee is John Muskopf. Members are Barbara Fratila, Tom Ronayne, Dana Wissink Hillis, and Jo Ann Brown.
2024 Winners
Mathew Dikeman – Needville HS
Matthew Dikeman is a graduate of Needville High School where he participated in varsity swimming, UIL, and National Honor Society. Outside of school, Matthew earned his Eagle Scout and Black Belt and was active in his church and community throughout high school. Matthew plans to attend the University of Oklahoma in Norman and pursue a degree in Meteorology. After earning his degree, he hopes to utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning to more accurately predict the weather and find new solutions to combat climate change.
Kelsie Myers – Brazosport HS
Kelsie Myers is a graduate of Brazosport High School and was active in Future Farmers of America, Varsity Swimming, Peer Assistance Leadership, National Honor Society, National Spanish Honors Society, and the Athletic Leadership Council. She devoted 350 hours to community service organizations including Harvest for the Hungry and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and other organizations. In the Fall, Kelsie will be attending the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she plans to major in Poultry Science and minor in Animal Science and ultimately begin a career in the poultry industry with a focus on genetics.
Alley Fitzgerald – Columbus HS
Alley Fitzgerald is a graduate of Columbus High School and was heavily involved in Future Farmers of American, National Honor Society, and Student Council throughout her high school years. Alley plans to major in Public Health at Texas A&M University and acquire a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). She ultimately plans to practice as a nurse anesthetist.
Grace Amestoy – El Campo HS
Grace Amestoy is a graduate of El Campo High School. Grace was involved Future Farmers of America, National Honor Society, Anchor Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She will be attending Texas A&M University in the fall to pursue a degree in Agricultural Economics with an emphasis on policy and finance and plans to begin a career in the agricultural policy sector.
Katelynn Dirzanowski – Columbia HS
Katelynn Dirzanowski, is a graduate of Columbia High School. She was deeply involved in numerous school activities including 4 years on varsity on both the soccer and the powerlifting teams. Katelynn will be attending Louisiana State University in the fall to pursue a degree in Computer Science with an emphasis in Cybersecurity and plans to work with government organizations to protect the software technology that is important in our lives.
Troy Meagher – Sweeny HS
Troy Meagher is a graduate of Sweeny High School. In high school, Troy participated in many sports and organizations including National Honor Society, Interact club, FCA, Football, Track, Powerlifting. Troy will be attending Texas A&M in the fall and intends to major in chemical engineering with the hope of remaining in the area as an engineer in one of the many chemical manufacturing plants located here
