A Good Sign on the River
Posted on May 5th, 2021

New "Road Work Ahead" sign alerts traffic to start of construction on new Churchill Bridge. Current bridge can been seen in the distance.

This is a good sign. It signals construction will begin soon on a new bridge that will replace Sportsman’s Span (also known as the Churchill Bridge) on FM 2611 over the San Bernard River .

The new bridge will have wider lanes and wider shoulders. It will be constructed on a site downriver from the old bridge which will remain open to traffic during the construction period. The new larger bridge will be a welcome change as we all have held our breath as we squeezed by an oversized vehicle passing in the opposite lane, always at the very top of the bridge.
