M/V Sweeney is known as a twin screw towboat powered by 2,000 hp twin Cummins KTA38-M2 diesel engines. Her girlish figure (built in 2014 makes her six years old) is 78’ L x 34’ W and her hull is 10’ D. Home port is Houston.
Unlike the nearby town of Sweeny, this vessel has an extra “e” in her name. M/V Sweeney has been seen on the San Bernard lately delivering empty barges and returning downriver with barges filled with product from Chevron Phillips and Phillips 66 refineries in Old Ocean. She originally was owned by Higman Barge Lines in Houston but was purchased in 2018 as part of the acquisition by Kirby Marine.
