A person born on or after September 1, 1993 who wishes to operate the following vessels ALONE, must be at least 13 years old and successfully passed a boater education course.
These vessels are:
• A personal watercraft (jet ski), or
• A powerboat powered by a motor of more than 15 horsepower, or
• A windblown vessel over 14 feet in length.
All ages are welcome to attend. The test is designed for adults, but middle school and high school kids do fine. Younger kids could come with a parent and just sit in, and decide at the end of the day whether they want to try the test.
Topics include boating laws, safety equipment, rules of the road, hunting and fishing, water-skiing, river boating and other boating tips.
Upon successfully completing the course, a Texas Boater Education Card is received. The card does not expire and does not need to be renewed. Not carrying your card when one is required can result in a fine. The only exemption to the mandatory education law is for persons born before September 1, 1993 but they are encouraged to take the course to promote boating safety.
Class fee is $25 payable to U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and $15 for each additional family member (cash or check). The Texas Safe Boating card is $10, payable to Texas Parks & Wildlife for those passing the USCG AUX test at the end of class. Lunch is free and provided by Friends of the River San Bernard.
