NWS Hydrologist Meets with FOR
Posted on May 1st, 2015
On April 30, 2015, a meeting was held with members of FOR and David C. Schwertz, Senior Service Hydrologist, Houston-Galveston Area National Weather Service Office, at the FOR Community Center. Mr. Schwertz is responsible for posting flood alerts and river level forecasts, which are prepared by the U.S Geological Survey (USGS) office in Ft. Worth, during potential flood conditions. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss how the predictions affect residents on the river and how these predictions could be improved. As a result of the meeting, Mr. Schwertz agreed to assist FOR in determining the feasibility of automating the river height gauge at the Sweeny Terminal (now read manually once a day), and/or replacing a now defunct gauge that once existed at SH 35. FOR also plans to meet with the USGS to evaluate how better real-time data could help to improve forecasts. –Bob Bailey
