Boat Ramp Repair

Historical Note: In the mid-1800’s, a ferry, owned by Lewis T. Bennett, located roughly a mile downriver from the Sportsman Span bridge, was used to transport travelers across the San Bernard. The site was referred to as the Churchill Ferry because of the previous landowner Andrew S. Churchill. The ferry was later replaced by a hand-operated drawbridge and that was replaced by the Churchill Bridge or Sportsman Span.

Richard Hurd, Director, Brazoria County Parks Department, reported major repairs being completed on three boat ramps. The Sportsman Span (Churchill Bridge) boat ramp on FM 2611, the boat ramp on Hwy 2004 and Halls Bayou and the boat ramp on Hwy 35 at Camp Mohawk were submitted for a federal grant through the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. The grant was funded and repairs are underway. All the wooden structures (finger piers) will be replaced at Sportsman Span.
Boat ramps provide the primary access to the rivers, bayous and coastal waters in Brazoria County. Both day use and craft stored on the river depend on these access points for their recreational activities and during severe weather to remove their boats from the waterways.
The Brazoria County Parks department is continually working to maintain the county’s 21 boat ramps in the best possible condition and looking for funding opportunities to upgrade ramps in need of major repairs.
