April 25, 2021. Looking out to the Gulf of Mexico, the coastline stretches southwest to the horizon. The intent is to dredge the river starting at the ICW to the Gulf. It looks as if the mouth will open (finally) and we all can say "A-h-h-h!"
Yes it’s official. Today, April 27, Brazoria County Commissioners’ Court approved advertising bids for dredging the mouth of the San Bernard River by Order No. 6.I.3. Bid contracts should be received back in 21 days and finalized by May 25th. In addition, the project will utilize RESTORE Act funding. Stay tuned for updates.! Anticipated start date is July 1, 2021 and expected completion October 1, 2021.

Without a jetty on the Freeport side of the river mouth, the mouth will be closed by silt in 1 or 2 years. I have been enjoying this river since 1979. Is someone going to build a jetty on the Freeport side to keep the river mouth open?

Unfortunately, in 2009 when it was dredged open, the folks in charge did not have a plan in place for maintenance dredging and consequently it silted shut in 2012. This time Port Freeport and Brazoria County have a 25-year interlocal agreement to split the cost of future periodic maintenance dredging of the mouth of the San Bernard River to keep it open and flowing to the Gulf.
