April Meeting Reports
Posted on Apr 16th, 2015
These reports are a way to let the public know what FOR’s been up to. It’s also a way that someone can determine if there is any way they’d like to get involved in things. Please contact FOR if you are interested. (Select Volunteer on the "Contact Us" drop down list.)
FOR Directors Marie Breakiron, Valroy Maudlin, Fred Kanter and President Tom Ronayne attended. Updates were heard from the city of Sweeny, Sweeny hospital, Sweeny ISD, Phillips 66 and Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. Mr. Tom Holt, H & H Ventures, commissioned by Sweeny Independent School District, discussed a housing survey of local employees to see where they live and what might attract them to live closer to work, i.e., in SISD.
Ten FOR members met with David C. Schwertz, Senior Service Hydrologist, Houston-Galveston Area National Weather Service Office, at the FOR Community Center. It was discussed how the predictions affect residents on the river and how these predictions could be improved. As a result of the meeting, Mr. Schwertz agreed to assist FOR in determining the feasibility of automating the river height gauge at the Sweeny Terminal (now read manually once a day), and/or replacing a now defunct gauge that once existed at SH 35. FOR also plans to meet with the USGS to evaluate how better real-time data could help to improve forecasts.
