The photo shows the huge sandbar that has built up at the mouth of the San Bernard River where it empties into the Gulf. This delta receives deposits of sediment drifting down from the Brazos River to the north. A narrow, shallow current turns sharply in a southerly direction, sticking close to the shoreline, as it empties into the Gulf. The three white dots in the center of the photo are shallow-draft recreational boats moored there because they could not cross the bar. Read history of the mouth closure.

The new bridge that's under construction at Sargent, is starting to take shape. It replaces the last swing bridge in the state of Texas. A corkscrew-style span takes FM 457 high over the Intracoastal Gulf Waterway as you spiral up on the east side, then over the ICW and spiral down the other side. Don’t try it now, you’ll spiral out of control - there’s a big construction gap in the middle.
