March Meeting Reports

It was the regular first-Sat-of-the-month breakfast, hosted by Friends of the River. Where the coffee's hot and so's the conversation about what's happenin' on the river.
- Mar 8, Sweeny Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet, Sweeny
 FOR San Bernard was represented at the annual awards banquet by President Mike Goodson and wife Suzanne, Director Kevin Henry and wife Lucinda and Ken Wright. Kevin’s dad, Sweeny Police Chief John Barnard, won the Chamber’s “Man-of-the-Year” award. Not pictured is Director Gary Kersh and wife Sherrie and Director Linda Wright.

- Mar 13, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Public Meeting, West Columbia
Concerned friends of the river, plus two Brazoria County Commissioners, attended the USACE meeting regarding proposed modifications to the existing Brazos River Floodgates and Colorado River Locks. Most of the public discussion was voiced opposition to the Corps plan to remove the existing west flood gate on the Intracoastal Waterway and replace it with an open 125 ft. wide channel. The San Bernard is situated four miles west of the existing flood gate. Attendees suggested that USACE build new modeling studies of flow, sediment transport and velocity magnitude from data during the time the San Bernard mouth was open instead of using data from the closed mouth as was done for this plan. The deadline for USACE project completion is approximately five years and the mouth will be open well before this date.
