Sixty friends attended the 11th annual FOR State of the River meeting on Feb 27, 2016 at Dido’s Restaurant. FOR Committee chairmen reported on the progress of their committees and the activities that happened this past year. They also explained their committee goals and future plans that everyone can look forward to participating in this coming year.
Meeting speaker Steve Rosa, Brazoria County Emergency Management Coordinator gave a PowerPoint presentation on “What is Emergency Management?”
Steve mentioned the possibility of salt water getting into your home during a hurricane storm surge if you are not at an elevation of 30 ft. (above sea level). A fifteen foot hurricane storm surge occurring at a high tide of two feet creates a seventeen foot storm tide. But then add 10-foot waves on top of the 17-foot storm and you at 27 feet or higher. A storm surge can begin to rise a day before the storm hits, cutting off escape routes when low-lying roads are flooded.
Giving an update regarding reopening the mouth, Brazoria County Commissioner David Linder reported “that no news is good news because they have done everything that they know to do and Brazoria County is shovel ready for this project.”
Money from the RESTORE Act that is funded by fines paid by British Petroleum for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill will help pay for the project. Notification of the recipients will come from the RESTORE Act Council some time after the April 15 grant proposal deadline.
Congressman Randy Weber, made the meeting having flown in from Washington DC the night before, sounded encouraging when he said, “you’re on their radar (US Army Corps of Engineers).”
