March Meeting Reports

- Mar 1, Breakfast on the Bernard, San Bernard River
Forty friends of the river attended the regular first-Saturday-of the-month breakfast at Dido's Restaurant. They pigged out on a great meal to celebrate the day of the pig – National Pig Day. Yes, bacon was included on the menu!
- Mar 5, FOR Environmental Committee Meeting, San Bernard River
Guest speakers at the meeting were Cindy Jordy and Reed Martin of Phillips 66. They presented an update on how surface water rights are administered in Texas. Cindy discussed Phillips 66 water rights and explained the pumping restrictions, reporting requirements, etc. associated with Phillips 66 permit to pump from the San Bernard. Eleven friends of the river attended the informative meeting.
- Mar 6, Texas Stream Team Houston Area Regional Meeting, H-GAC Houston
Representing FOR at the meeting were Valroy Maudlin and Ken Wright, San Bernard Stream Team citizen monitors. At the meeting, they met two other Stream Team members who test water quality on the San Bernard. John Hellings who tests at Cox's Reef, which lies halfway between the Churchill Bridge and River’s End, and Peter & Peggy Romfh, who test at Hanson Park and Bernard Acres and live in Houston. Updates were presented on the Texas Stream Team program, H-GAC’s 22-yr. partnership with Texas Stream Team, various watershed protection plans in the Houston Galveston area and how Texas Stream Team partners are using citizen scientists to improve water quality.
- Mar 12, Clean Waters Initiative Workshop, H-GAC, Houston
Representing FOR San Bernard at the meeting were Mouth Committee Co-chairs Mike Goodson and Nick Fratila, Director Suzanne Goodson and President Wayne Head. This Clean Waters Initiative (CWI) workshop included general information about the RESTORE Act, its timeline, who will be involved and local efforts. (Note, the considerable amount of work is now underway that must be completed prior to preparing a RESTORE Act application for reopening the mouth.) The RESTORE Act established a Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council that is responsible for distribution of federal civil penalties resulting from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill ligation. Speakers included National Wildlife Federation, Fish and Wildlife Service, Katy Prairie Conservancy and Galveston Bay Foundation.
- Mar 21, Sweeny Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet, Sweeny
Representing FOR at the annual awards banquet held at the Sweeny Community Center was Director Ana and Charlie Pogue, Past President Marie and Bob Breakiron, Treasurer Bob and Susan Bailey and Director Linda and Ken Wright.
