President John Swanson reviewed last year’s FOR projects and accomplishments to sixty friends at FOR’s “State of the River” meeting on Sat Feb 25th at Dido’s Restaurant.
“Thanks to a wonderful turnout of river friends and neighbors supporting FOR! We very much appreciate folks from CP Chem and Phillips 66 for also attending, visiting with river residents and providing prizes for our "Just Because Giveaway”! What a blessing to see everyone socializing and enjoying a beautiful spring afternoon on the river. Thanks to Dido’s Restaurant for providing great service and a great place to hold this important FOR meeting.” –John Swanson, FOR President
These speakers gave detailed presentations at the meeting:
- FM 521 Flood Gauge
“FOR recently signed an agreement with USGS for the installation of a flood gauge at FM 521. Hopefully this install will be done by late summer." - FOR Director Mike Goodson
- Mouth Opening Update
"Brazoria county commissioners recently approved a contract to change the existing permit for the mouth dredging project. This will allow a much larger area to be dredged on the east side of the mouth area. Hopefully this permit will be completed by year end. We are currently working with the COE to attach our project with next their dredging cycle. This would be in the November/December 2024 time frame.” - FOR Director Mike Goodson
- Waste Water Discharge in the River
“FOR representatives and river residents met with the Brazoria mayor and city manager and insisted that temporary repairs to the badly damaged and poorly performing Brazoria wastewater treatment plant had to be pursued while waiting for a permanent fix that would require years to complete. City Council responded by appropriating $800,000 and working with their engineering firm, representatives from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Services, an engineer loaned to the effort by Susie Alford of LJA Enginering, and representatives from FOR, the plant that hadn't functioned properly for more than a decade was restored to 80% capacity in just four months." - FOR Director Tom Ronayne
- Help to Repair or Replace Failing Septic Systems
"FOR is close to finalizing an arrangement to provide up to $15,000 per year in funding to H-GAC to address such systems within the San Bernard River watershed.” - FOR Director Tom Ronayne
