If you oppose the construction of a facility in Brazoria County to house imported primates (monkeys) for live laboratory testing, please consider writing to State Rep. Cody Vasut, State Senator Joan Huffman and U.S. Representative Randy Weber to express your opinion and enlist their help to stop the project. You may use your own words or the sample letter below, but please let your opinion be known. Congressman Weber’s liaison, Dodie Armstrong, advises that their office tracks the number of calls on an issue and that adds weight to the Congressman’s efforts on our behalf. Plans have been proposed by Charles River Laboratories to build a large facility to house primates (monkeys) for use in live animal testing of new medicines. Charles River Labs has purchased 538 acres of land off CR 2 and FM 1301 at Danciger, Brazoria County. Imported primarily from southeast Asia, the animals could, and likely would bring with them pathogens that could be spread to adjacent properties via mosquitoes, fleas, ticks, birds, etc.  Livestock and wildlife would be at risk for infection, and humans are especially susceptible to pathogens from primates. The area is low-lying, environmentally sensitive land in the San Bernard River Watershed. The property is prone to flooding, which may lead to biological waste from both live and destroyed animals contaminating the river. 

 

On November 28, 2023, Brazoria County Commissioners Court passed a unanimous resolution opposing the facility. Unfortunately, counties in Texas have minimal authority to regulate the use of private property. State and Federal agencies will need to step in. Please use all authority and influence of your office to stop this project.
