Seen lounging on a sunny bank of the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge Moccasin Pond Auto Tour is a 12-foot alligator whose size was determined by using the rule of thumb of measuring (in this case estimating) the distance from the eyes to the end of the snout and converting the inches to feet. Hence, 12 inches from eyes to snout equals a 12-foot gator. The water indicates the refuge is recovering from the terrible drought experienced this past summer.
