Columbia Bottomlands
Posted on Oct 6th, 2016

The Nature Conservancy has gotten a $14 million donation from BHP Billiton, an Anglo-Australian multinational mining, metals and petroleum company headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, to purchase ecologically valuable land in Texas (and Arkansas).

The Conservancy has purchased close to 1,900 acres of forest land on the Brazos and San Bernard rivers. Protecting and restoring the old-growth forests in this region protects water quality in the Brazos, San Bernard, and other important rivers and streams.

The San Bermard Woods Preserve, 1,656 acres of intact forest  located west of West Columbia, will be used mainly for research. Professors and universities can do projects studying the plants and animals.
