Taking advantage of the picture-perfect Oct. day, with a light breeze coming from the north at about 4 knots, Ken Wright sailed leisurely up the San Bernard (between the Churchill bridge and the McNeel bridge) in his small Sunfish sailboat. A short distance upriver, on a tack toward the west bank, he noticed the sun reflecting on an unattended fishing line that was about 6 feet above the water in front of his boat. A quick tack to miss it failed when the line caught on the boat’s mast. After sailing into several feet of the line, Ken saw that a fish was hooked on the end when it surfaced close to the the boat, rolled over and slapped its tail on the water. It was a keeper red. 

 

Ken stopped the forward motion of the boat by releasing the main sheet. He then crawled forward, grabbed the fishing line and pushed it under the bow of the boat and tacked away. When he returned to his dock, he called the owner of the fishing line, Bob Bailey, and told him to reel in his line because he had a nice catch!
