On June 13, 2023, workers hang in a safety cage next to the FM 521 bridge while installing the new flood gauge. The gauge is funded jointly by Brazoria County Commissioners and Friends of the River San Bernard
Note: The closed mouth has a bigger impact on how fast flood waters go down than it does on how high they get. Particularly from FM 521 northward, if your property is flood prone now, it will still be flood prone once the mouth is opened. It will just drain off faster.

Keeping Track of the River Rise
Now is a good opportunity for property owners to observe the San Bernard River flood gauges upriver from them. View the five gauges FM 521, Hwy 35, Boling, East Bernard, and Chesterville on the "Important Links" web page.. See how high the crest is at FM 521 and then how long it took to get there from the upriver crests.
The National Weather Service forecasts another 4ft rise at Hwy 35 taking into account the crest coming down from Boling and any additional rain predicted in the next 24 hours. That translates to an additional 2 ft at FM 521, so docks from that area and on upriver may go under. Additional rain upriver could cause the river to rise further than current forecasts, so anyone with furniture or boats that might be affected should keep an eye on the radar and rainfall amounts.
