River Benefits from The Home Depot Foundation
Because of the work of Team Depot, three items in need of repair at the Friends of the River (FOR) San Bernard Community Center were renovated on December 10-11, 2015. Members of Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, provided the sweat equity and the Lake Jackson Home Depot provided the supplies to complete the project.
Home Depot volunteers included Peter Bergman, Store Manager, Rick Lange, Asst. Store Manager, Daniel Boykin, Jeffrey Siburt, Tia Phillips, Vincent “Vinny” Johansen, Taylor Hirams, and Randy Stiles. Team Depot is part of The Home Depot’s core value of giving back to the community.
Repairs made to the riverside dock consisted of adding 2 x 8 stringers replacing those washed away in recent floods. Old deck boards were removed and replaced with new decking. Bolts were added connecting the cross pieces directly to the pilings, eliminating the possibility of future flood damage. The playground equipment and picnic tables were power washed and painted with exterior paint.
All of this was completed in time for the annual Christmas boat parade scheduled the next evening. The FOR Community Center is one of the spots open to the public for viewing the boat parade on the night of the event. Also, the center is used to hold FOR Environmental public education programs during the year and is available for public rental.
Community Center co-chair Suzanne Goodson explored several possibilites for grants but The Home Depot Foundation was the only one who replied to her request for a donation.
Lunch for the workers was provided by FOR San Bernard and Dido’s Restaurant.
