H-GAC's Best-Worst Bacteria Levels
Posted on Jan 17th, 2014
The map, done for the H-GAC San Bernard Watershed Protection Plan (WPP) shows the best and worst bacterial levels on the San Bernard.
In the January 16, 2014 issue of the BRAZORIA COUNTY NEWS, a front page article referred to Houston-Galveston Area Council's Watershed Protection Plan for the San Bernard Watershed where "high bacteria levels, portions of the San Bernard River have been designated unsuitable for recreational activities, such as swimming. In addition, excessive nutrients and low dissolved oxygen levels have also been found which may negatively affect fish and other aquatic life."
The worst bacteria level and worst DO (dissolved oxygen) level was attained at a monitoring station located in the northern portion of the watershed, approximately 50 miles north of the FM 521 bridge west of Brazoria. This monitoring station is immediately downstream of US 90A in East Bernard where the river is narrow, shallow and likely to be influenced by a higher concentration of bacteria levels. This area of the river is not located in the southern portion of the San Bernard where boating, fishing and swimming are popular water recreational activities.
The best bacterial level was attained at a monitoring station on the Colorado-Austin County line approximately 9 mi sw of Cat Spring, also in the northern portion of the watershed.
The best DO level was attained at the monitoring station on Hwy 35 near West Columbia.
