State of River Meeting Held
Posted on Feb 23rd, 2025
Despite experiencing a cold forty-degree breeze, seventy-six friends of the river warmed up at Dido’s Restaurant during the nineteenth annual FOR “State of the River” meeting on Sat Feb 22, 2025.

FOR President Sheila Wardlaw welcomed the attendees.

Brazoria County Commissioners David Linder, Pct 4 and Jay Burridge, Pct.1 gave an impromptu talk of various county issues. On a positive note, it looks as if Commissioner Burridge is swearing to tell the truth.

The keynote speaker for the State of the River meeting was Timothy Dellapenna, Professor of Marine and Coastal Environmental Science at Texas A&M University at Galveston. His presentation focused on the possible impacts removal of the West Gate at the intersection of the Brazos River and the Intracoastal Waterway (ICWW) might have on sedimentation at the mouth of the San Bernard.
After several years of studying core samples from the Brazos River, the San Bernard River, the Colorado River, and the inland lakes west of the San Bernard, e.g., Cedar Lake and Cow Trap, and after extensive modeling of sediment flow, Dellapenna's team was able to establish the following conclusion: removal of the West Gate at the Brazos River would have minimal impact on sedimentation at the mouth of the San Bernard River.
Possible subjects of additional study would be revising the geometry of the San Bernard/ICWW intersection and installing a gate west of there to force more Brazos flow through the San Bernard cut, thereby helping to flush sediment from the mouth.

Lucky winners of the “Just Because” giveaway prizes at the SOR meeting are Mike Maples, Nancy Kanter, Jamey Davis and John Kress. The two winners on the left will be drinking out of FOR thermal cups while the two on the right will be creating sand paintings.
