Night of Intrigue on the River
A story of mystery and discovery on the San Bernard
By Nancy Kanter & Bert Smith
It was a dark and gloomy night on the river. Fred and Nancy Kanter had just finished watching a late night movie. Hearing what they thought was a low flying plane, Nancy peered out the window and saw a suspicious light moving in a back and forth pattern.
Could this be a repeat of a plane that recently flew night time reconnaissance over the Charles River Primate Facility near Danciger and the San Bernard River? Nancy thought it possible since the river was flooding as an aftermath of the recent Hurricane Beryl and this was important information that would be attained.
She called pilot Bert Smith who had discovered past details of the first aerial mapping of the monkey facility. Bert answered the phone and not answering hello but, “yes I know, we need to go to the airport to check out the plane and find who and what is happening.”
A meeting was set for midnight at the local What-a-burger. They took Bert’s car and proceeded to the airport and drove through the main gate. Bert had already located the plane numbers and type of aircraft when they saw it had refueled and was taking off. On the side of the plane written in bold letters was the name “Rent To Kill”! It sounded very menacing.
But after a few questions, it turned out Brazoria County Commissioner Matt Sebesta had done a good job of arranging the “Rent to Kill” plane to do some low-level flying while spraying for a wicked infestation of mosquitoes over the river. That's all it was...Fred, Nancy, and Bert quietly returned to What-a-burger, ordered some burgers and hung out for a time with the late night teenagers.
