18th Annual Meeting Held

President John Swanson welcomed 61 attendees to the 18th Annual Meeting & Election of Directors on Sat Sep 28th at Dido’s Restaurant ’s patio. After giving the Invocation, Prez John invited everyone to participate in a FOR complimentary taco buffet. Taco ’bout a great idea!
After the break, President Swanson listed this year’s FOR activities - Saturday Breakfast on the Bernard, Adopt a Highway Cleanup, Trash Mash River Cleanup, Easter Egg Hunt, Two Boat Parades, Scholarships for schools in SB watershed, Public Education Programs, Fundraiser, Christmas Toy Drive & Baskets, and FOR Website.

President Swanson also followed up on the announcement of the scrapping of the Charles River Laboratories breeding facility plan by saying Commissioner David Lindner had met personally with two Charles River Associates from Boston. They told him they had never seen a community like Brazoria County come together and fight so strong for something in their best interest

Port Freeport

Commissioner Barbara Fratila proudly announced that with approval of the 2025 Port Budget with a zero dollar tax rate for homeowners in the Port Freeport tax district. Cars and bananas are busy port clients. Volkswagens started unloading from a ship in March at an annual rate of 140,000 vehicles. 40 million bananas (America’s most popular fruit) pass through the port every week. |
City of Brazoria WWTP

Mayor Phillip Ray announced ten people toured the Brazoria wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), a 1980’s racetrack design, on Friday morning Sep 20.The tour was organized by FOR Environmental Chairman Keith Cunningham. The plant was running like was supposed to with nothing to hide. The problem now is with infiltration or groundwater seeping into sewer pipes through faulty connections causing problems. The other problem is cash flow to pay for all the improvements. One bid of $23 mil was received after sending out 13 bids. |

FOR Director Mike Goodson explained that the existing mouth dredging permit plans to increase the channel to 700 ft wider. Approximately 300,000 cubic yards of material is planned to be dredged in order to increase the depth of the channel to 10 feet. NOAA Fisheries (National Marine Fisheries) has had permit for months and will ok this fall. It then goes back to COE for dredging where County will tag onto an existing dredge in 2025.
