New Committee Chairs Announced

Friends of the River (FOR) San Bernard President John Swanson announces the appointment of two new chairmen of the organization’s Environmental Committee and River Ranger Program. FOR is a river-based group advocating clean, healthy and abundant water for the San Bernard River watershed. The organization also supports and participates in regular roadway litter and river cleanups and annually awards six high school scholarships

Keith Cunningham has been named FOR Environmental Committee Chair. He and wife Stephanie have been residents of the river part-time for 20 years and full-time for three years. Keith is an IT with Plains Pipeline. He replaces Justin Hillis who was program chair for the last five years and has moved to the position of FOR Board Director.
As Environmental Chair, Cunningham will encourage programs that restore, protect, promote and ensure a clean, healthy, flowing San Bernard River. Monthly meetings are open to the public and held at 6:00 pm the first Thursday of the month at Dido’s Restaurant on the San Bernard River.

Claudia Pechacek has been named FOR River Ranger Program Chair. She replaces Adalia Maudlin who was the program’s chairman for over a decade. Claudia and husband Mel have lived on river for 15 years. She assisted with the River Ranger program pre-Covid and taught in the Alief ISD as an “English as a second language” (ESL) and reading specialist for 27 years.
As River Ranger Chairman, Claudia will be presenting an educational program to fifth grade students that raises awareness of the San Bernard River watershed and its environmental concerns. Schools involved are located in the San Bernard River watershed. These include Bellville, Brazos, Sealy, Brazosport, Columbia-Brazoria, Sweeny, Columbus, Rice Consolidated, Lamar Consolidated, Needville, Boling, East Bernard, El Campo and Wharton schools.
