Proposed New Flood Gauge on FM 521

Existing flood gauges on the San Bernard are located at Chesterville, East Bernard, Boling and Hwy 35 (Old Ocean). The proposed new flood gauge will be located at FM 521 bridge and San Bernard River.
Two and a half years ago, Friends of the River (FOR) San Bernard started a conversation with the National Weather Service (NOAA) in League City about the possibility of an additional flood gauge on the San Bernard River. The biggest obstacle was having a partner to cover the yearly maintenance expense of about $18,000. After many meetings and conversations with the Army Corps of Engineers (COE) in Galveston, they agreed to cover the expense. The gauge will also be used to collect additional flooding information useful for conditions on the Intracoastal Waterway. A TxDot permit for installation of the FM 521 gauge has been applied for, and hopefully, the project will be completed by late spring of 2023.
