Union Pacific RR Advisory - Recv'd Fri May 4th
Posted on May 3rd, 2018

Wed May 23rd:
A Union Pacific PR rep explained that an Interstate Commerce Route that answers to several state and federal agencies, as well as all their shippers, is required to schedule the rail closing and the river closing that goes with it, at the time of least traffic. That made the Memorial Day weekend part of the week long outage.
Thu May 3rd:
"WHAT: Union Pacific will replace the existing rail bridge structure over the San Bernard River in southwest Brazoria County. While preliminary work is already underway, the main work on the structure will last from May 26-29.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: During the construction process, boat and barge traffic travelling beneath the bridge will be temporarily suspended. Boat traffic will be prohibited from May 26 through May 29, and barge traffic will not resume until the first of June.

The bridge has been on Union Pacific’s schedule for replacement, but received extensive damage during Hurricane Harvey. The damage was temporarily fixed, but the company accelerated plans for a complete replacement. The project will convert the existing swing span bridge to a lift bridge.

Union Pacific appreciates the patience of boaters and residents in the area during this construction project

Construction is now happening on the Union Pacific RR new vertical-lift bridge that is replacing the older bridge (the lower horizontal span) on the San Bernard. When completed, the new center span will rise vertically allowing marine traffic to pass through underneath.
<< This is a closeup of the workers seen in the photo above standing on the top left of the bridge. Gulp!
Mon April 30th:
An email was received from the Project Manager for the Union Pacific Railroad Bridge replacement over the San Bernard.
It stated NO marine traffic will be allowed to travel from one side of the RR bridge through to the other side, starting Sat May 26 to Fri Jun 1, during the bridge change out.
FOR President Mike Goodson has called Anthony Raphael, Project Manager and discussed since this falls on Memorial weekend, a popular time for boaters. He is to send an email with complaint that will be forwarded to UPRR and Coast Guard. If a notice of change of date is found out, it will be posted on the FOR website
Email any complaints to Tony Raphael, Project Manager, Union Pacific Railroad Bridge, at araphael@americanbridge.net
