Take a Look Back at Last Year

As we begin our New Year, pause to reminisce about the past year and the FOR events that affected and shaped our river community.
 
January
  • Jan 6 - FOR hosted Breakfast on the Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant
  • Jan 13 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • Jan 18 - Tarpon measuring 26 - 28 inches found between FM 521 bridge and FM 2611 bridge
  • Jan 20 - E-Water Recycling event held at Brazoria Fairgrounds
  • Jan 29 - Government officials visit the mouth of the river to assess the after Harvey changes for approval of RESTORE funding (Deepwater Horizon oil spill funds) to reopen the mouth.

February
  • Feb 1 - TXGLO information of deadline to repair docks
  • Feb 3 - FOR hosted Breakfast on the Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant
  • Feb 5 - Twelve FOR/Adopt a Highway volunteers picked up 31 bags of trash on two miles of FM 2611
  • Feb 7 - TXGLO starts removal of Hurricane Harvey flood debris from river
  • Feb 9 - 1,300 copies of FOR “Current News” newsletter mailed to friends of the river
  • Feb 10 - FOR State of the River meeting held at Dido’s Restaurant. Speakers included Brazoria County Commissioners Dude Payne and David Linder, Tara Whittle, TXGLO, Justin Bower, H-GAC and Katie Landry, Senior Service Hydrologist, National Weather Service Houston/Galveston,
  • Feb 15 - Graph showing 15 yrs of San Bernard River levels, compiled by FOR Director Bob Bailey
  • Feb 18 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • Feb 21 -  FOR Ranger program presented to 46 fifth grade science students at Wild Peach Elementary School.
  • Feb 28 - TXGLO closes in on finish of debris collection along 30 miles of river. An estimated total amount of 30,000 cubic yds of trash was removed.
March
  • Mar 3 - FOR hosted Breakfast on the Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant
  • Mar 10 - FOR Environmental Committee presents a homeowner septic system program at the FOR Community Center, free, open to the public
  • Mar 8 - Port Freeport voted unanimously to help finance maintenance dredging of the mouth once it is open.
  • Mar 13 - USACE Galveston District public meeting notice regarding proposed project of modifications to remove existing Brazos River West Floodgates located on the Intracoastal Waterway.
  • Mar 16 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team

  • Mar 27 - County Commissioners present Resolution concerning the controversy between the USACE plans for modification of the Brazos River Floodgates and the omission of any data from an open San Bernard mouth.
  • Mar 31 - FOR Easter Egg Hunt held at FOR Community Center
April
  • Apr 5 - “Write the Wrong” campaign for sending email of public comments to USACE regarding proposed modifications of removing the existing Brazos River West Floodgates and how it will affect the San Bernard River.
  • Apr 7 - FOR hosted Breakfast on the Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant
  • Apr 13 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • Apr 13 - “Remembering Departed Friends” - Buddy Leon Kenneda
  • Apr 16 - FOR Ranger program presented to 121 fifth grade science students at West Columbia Elementary School.
  • Apr 17 - Government officials make second visit to mouth to examine issues of dredging, flood mitigation, and future maintenance using RESTORE grant funds.

  • Apr 28 - FOR Environmental Committee presents the “Guffey-Wingo Fish Cooking Class” at the FOR Community Center, free, open to the public.
May
  • May 3 - Union Pacific replaces existing span rail bridge structure over the San Bernard with a lift bridge.
  • May 5 - FOR hosted Breakfast on the Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant. Ten FOR “Taste Buds” judges rated barbecued rib entries at Sweeny Pride Day Annual Cookoff
  • May 10 - U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat was seen on the river executing a hydrographic survey to monitor local river conditions 
  • May 8 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • May 17 - FOR Scholarship Committee awarded six $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school Seniors living in the San Bernard River watershed who have demonstrated a direct connection between their career path and the betterment of the environment.
June
  • Jun 2 - FOR hosted Breakfast on the Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant

  • Jun 9 - Eight FOR/Adopt a Highway volunteers picked up 21 bags of carelessly tossed litter along a two mile stretch of FM 2611
  • Jun 12 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • Jun 13 - Portion of USCOE public notice regarding opening the mouth of the river
  • Jun 23 - FOR Environmental Committee presents boating safety course at the FOR Community Center, open to the public
  • Jun 30 - Annual July 4th Boat Parade held

  • Aug 25 - A couple of moving proposals from the 22 Jun 2018, federal government’s 132-page reorganization proposal “Reform Plan and Reorganization Recommendations”
  • Aug 29 - National Weather Service updates flood criteria for San Bernard River
September
  • Sep 1 - FOR hosted Breakfast on Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant. Photo on website of chair sitting 25 ft up a tree left over from Hurricane Harvey flood the year before.
  • Sep 8 - Notice that H-GAC has funding available for the repair and replacement of failing conventional septic systems or aerobic on-site sewage facilities. Funding is available to homeowners who meet certain income restrictions.

  • Sep 11 - First “What’s Comin’ Down River” flow report started. FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • Sep 17 - FOR Environmental Committee presents birding program at FOR Community Center, free, open to public
  • Sep 18 - Two nominations for 2018-2021 Directors announced
  • Sep 21 - 1,300 copies of FOR “Current News” newsletter mailed to friends of the river
  • Sep 22 - FOR Board of Directors elected at annual meeting
  • Sep 29 - Annual FOR River Cleanup cancelled due to weather conditions. Instead a mini river cleanup completed by river residents near Sweeny. Big debris items like two freezers were retrieved.
October
  • Oct 6 - FOR hosted Breakfast on Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant. Annual FOR Fundraiser “Party in ParrotDise” held at FOR Community Center
  • Oct 8 - National Weather Service information and photo of Chesterville flood gauge
  • Oct 9 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team

  • Nov 13 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team

December
  • Dec 3 - FOR hosted Breakfast on Bernard, Dido’s Restaurant. Floating hot tub Christmas present suggestion.
  • Dec 4 - FOR volunteers Valroy Maudlin and Tim Logan test water quality along the river at two locations for Texas Stream Team
  • Dec 8 & 11 - “What’s Comin’ Down River” flow report
  • Dec 10 - Annual lighted Christmas Boat Parade cancelled due to flooding conditions but approx 100 friends of the river attended Awards Party the next day at Liquid Rides building. Only Home Decorating contest winners announced.
  • Dec 15 - Status of Santa’s workshop reported (for the believers)
