River advocates set to host hurricane event

Published July 27, 2008

BRAZORIA — What would you do if a hurricane was barreling across Gulf waters headed straight for Brazoria County? What’s the current evacuation plan if the worst happens?

Friends Of the River San Bernard, known as FOR, will present a special event to help answer those questions from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 8 in the FOR Community Center at 20450 CR 510-B in the Holiday Shores subdivision of Brazoria.

That program, “Hurricane Prepared-ness and Evacuation,” will feature apeaker Steve Rosa, assistant emergency management coordinator for Brazoria County.

Doors open for the free seminar at 6 p.m. on that Friday.

As the height of the hurricane season nears, Gulf waters heat up and tropical disturbances are occurring across the Atlantic Ocean. That means its past time to make preparations to keep family members and property safe from a storm. To that end, Rosa will present a slide show of what is projected to happen in the area if it gets a storm surge from a direct hit.

Rosa also will discuss the county’s current evacuation plan and why people should heed evacuation orders and plans, including information on who to call to find out if it is safe to return after a storm.

The seminar will include a question-and-answer session.

In a press release, FOR sponsors say of the evening, “with gas prices being so high, an evacuation will prove challenging to all of us.

“But, as a community, we can help each other through any storm that comes our way — we just need to know how to help ourselves and our community.”

“This seminar can help us make plans to keep the people and things we hold dear safe — in case the worst case scenario ever happens.”
