Group seeking
helpers for highway clean-up
Published June

Get ready to
clean up our adopted highway, FM
2918. The summer is here and more
people are traveling to the San
Bernard Refuge and FM 2918 boat ramp
— some leaving reminders of their
visits. Friends of the River is
looking for 12 volunteer friends and
neighbors to clean up 2 miles of FM
2918 on July 10 from 10 a.m. to
11:30 a.m. as part of FOR’s
quarterly commitment to the Texas
Department of Transportation
Adopt-a-Highway program.
The first quarterly road clean-ups
took place on
April 5 and were held in conjunction
with Texas Trash Off Day. On July
10, FOR volunteers will be cleaning
up their portion of adopted highway
after the big July 4 holiday weekend
and is scheduled on a Thursday in
order to encourage area youth out of
school for the summer holiday to
participate. The age requirement for
participation, set by the state is
no children younger than age 7. Each
child 7 to 14 must be supervised by
a parent.
Volunteers will meet at Bernard
Grocery at about 10 a.m. where
Chairman Pat Jankowiak will
distribute safety vests, bags, trash
stabbers (aka flounder gigs) and
give final instructions before
moveing to 2 miles of FM 2918 at
about 10:30 a.m. to begin picking up
trash.
Volunteers should bring mosquito
spray, sunscreen, hats, gloves and
boots. Trash bags and cold water
will be provided. If it rains, the
clean up will be held on July 11.
The trash pick up will end around
noon. There will be a picnic lunch
provided for volunteers immediately
following the event.
