Group raising money for river

Published October 20, 2007

Friends of the River San Bernard sees the river as a legacy for future generations. The river affects all communities West of the Brazos and many other people throughout the state who have enjoyed fishing, skiing or just a scenic sunset on the water. The group is asking friends of the river to do their part by participating from noon to

3 p.m. Oct. 28 in the River Raiser at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 20632 N. Highway 36, Brazoria.

Besides the group’s current efforts of working with officials to open the river mouth, conducting cleanups, parades and public meetings, Friends of the River is expanding its activities to include water quality testing, education and raising awareness of flood studies and the effects of development on the San Bernard watershed. Money is needed to keep the wheels of progress rolling forward.

River raiser events include a roast beef dinner, live entertainment by Ronnie Coleman, live and silent auctions, and free children’s activities like a moonwalk, face painting and a clown. James Drury (of The Virginian television fame) will sign autographs for a donation to Friends of the River.

Dinner is $10 or free for children younger than 10 years old. Tickets are available at the door or by calling Marilyn Shockley at (979) 482-0368. A full list of auction items can be previewed at www.san
