Volunteers needed for today’s cleanup

Published April 28, 2007

Friends of the River San Bernard is looking for old and new friends who are ready to help with the annual spring cleaning of the San Bernard River from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today. Volunteers should bring their boats, bug spray, sunscreen, gloves and a willingness to help to one of the five collection sites along the 26 miles of river due for a spring cleaning.

These sites are: the Hanson Riverside County Park at Highway 35, the public boat ramps at FM 521, FM 2611 and the end of FM 2918, and 2J’s Café and Marina off FM 2918. At these sites, volunteers can sign a release form and get a Clean-Team T-shirt, some trash bags and a beverage. There will be an appreciation dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Taylor home, 2909 CR 604.

More than 100 people have committed to help clean up the everyday trash such as plastic bags, drink cans and Styrofoam containers that ends up in the river. About 7,000 pounds of heavy debris, including old tires, refrigerators and washing machines, already were removed from the river April 20 and Monday.

More people to clean equals more trash out of the river. Every friend’s help makes the river a better place to live, play or work.

During the event, officials from the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department; Brazoria County Engineer’s office, Environmental Health division; Texas Parks and Wildlife Law Enforcement division and Fisheries Management; and the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge will be on the river to help out and keep the river safe for volunteers cleaning the banks.

Sincere thanks go out to BEARS (owner/operator Kenny McGehee), who donated the use of the Dumpsters for the cleanup; Republic Waste (Steve Carroll) which donated the disposal of the debris for the cleanup, and 2J’s Café and Marina which allowed us to put a large Dumpster on their property for this event. Thanks also goes to ConocoPhillips, which donated the T-shirts and the trash bags, and to Brazoria City Councilman Terry Brown, who donated cases of water for the event.

To sign up, call David Pope at (979) 798-6251 or go to sanbernardriver.com and click on the Spring Clean 2007 tab.

See you on the river!
