BRAZORIA
River group to host anniversary event
Friends of the River San Bernard will celebrate its first year together with a
town hall meeting from
7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Dido’s Restaurant, 2922 CR 519, on the San Bernard
River.
In addition to previewing the 2007 goals for the board of directors and
committees, the second annual Ralph Primeau Memorial Award will be presented to
a person who has gone “above and beyond” in the past year for the betterment for
the San Bernard River and its communities.
Peter M. Lavigne will be the keynote speaker, and there will be light
entertainment. Social hour will begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m.
In its first year, Friends of the River has created a Web site with almost
110,000 visits, adopted a mission statement and bylaws, filed articles of
incorporation, became an IRS-recognized non-profit corporation and elected its
first board of directors. The group removed 26,000 pounds of garbage from the
river last spring and has had four boat parades.
The group also hosted the “Can You Dig It” event to dramatize the river’s mouth
being closed, which it hopes to repeat this year, and hosted numerous dignitary
boat trips to the end of the river to raise awareness and solicit support for
the No. 1 goal — opening the river mouth.
