July 2007 Summary
of News, Accomplishments and Events
July 5 Members of
F.O.R.set up for the Friends of the
River booth and display at the Coastal
Expo area of the Fishing Fiesta in
Freeport.
July 6-8 Members of F.O.R. manned
booth at Coastal Expo distributing
F.O.R. Literature, river mouth and
watershed information (provided by Houston
Galveston Area Council).
July 7 Breakfast on the Bernard. 80 +
in attendance. The featured couple for July was
Charlie and Jerrie Grantham.
July 9 F.O.R.'s Fourth of July Boat
Parade was cancelled, due to flooded conditions.
Members attended a dinner of hot dogs and all
the trimmings, held on the grounds at 2
J's Cafe and Marina, followed by a
fireworks display, courtesy River's End
Volunteer Fire Department.
July 11 Mouth Committee members attended the
Brazoria County Shoreline Restoration Task Force
meeting. C.E.P.R.A. grant requests for
the county were discussed.
July 10 Board of Directors meeting. The Board
voted unanimously in favor of pursuing more
information regarding the Lion's Club donation
of the community center, by conferring with
legal council. Flood study, River Raiser,
Dock Hop discussions.
July 16 Board members met with F.O.R. attorney,
Lynnn Klement, to discuss legalities concerning Lion's
Club Community Center. Lynn agreed to draft
the lease agreement.
July 27 Unscheduled Board meeting called
to discuss legalities, concerning the possible
acquisition of the Lion's Club Community
Center. Discussions on lease agreement,
building rental fees and River Raiser
raffle items.
July 28 The San Bernard River was the subject of
both a photo and an article included in a
special edition of The Facts -"My
Place", a story written by Jan Edwards,
F.O.R. San Bernard's Press Representative.
The section also included a photo taken by
F.O.R. Member, Rachel Graham.

present a qualified slate of nominees, for
future F.O.R. Board of Directors.

meeting and election of five new F.O.R.

Parade:
Vanessa Taylor
F.O.R. San Bernard's 4th of July
Celebration dinner was held at 2J's Cafe and
Marina. Co-Chairs for this event were Jana
Gardner and Mark Manley. Attendance was 100+.
The day was enjoyed by all, in spite of the
cancellation of the parade, due to flooded river
conditions. First place winner in the Design
the Shirt contest was Cori Higgins, from
Sweeny Junior High. Parade shirts printed by
X-pressions Tshirts and More.

On June29th, Jan Edwards (as the Singing River)
posted a synopsis of the San Bernard River
Mouths woes on the Smithsonian website
(www.smithsonian.com) under Reader Sound Off
(their discussion page) in the Science section
and also e-mailed a letter to the editor
requesting they write a story about the San
Bernard River Mouth. To date there have been 920
views of the Smithsonian blog.
One of F.O.R.'s primary functions is to educate
the public regarding the issues concerning the
San Bernard River and it's communities. Contact
