F.O.R. San Bernard Activity Update
November 2006

Summary of News, Accomplishments and Events:

 November 2 F.O.R.'s Parade Chairwoman, Vanessa Taylor, held the first 20th Annual Christmas Boat Parade meeting at Dido's. Several action items were delegated to parade volunteers, and work has begun to make this 20th Annual Christmas Boat Parade and Home Decorating Contest the biggest and best, ever.

November 7 River Mouth Committee Chairman, Roy Edwards, had the opportunity, at a public meeting, to discuss river mouth issues with Congressman Ron Paul. 

November 8 F.O.R. San Bernard River Mouth Chairman and other F.O.R. members attended the regularly scheduled meeting ofThe Brazoria County Shoreline Restoration Task Force, held at the Port of Freeport.

November 9 F.O.R. San Bernard Board of Directors regular meeting held at City Hall in Brazoria. Agenda items include:Update by Committee Chairs, Review of Bylaws: Update was given by the Management team. Due to the fact that the bylaws did not allow for an alternate board position, the alternate board position was eliminated. Also on the agenda was Brazoria County Days, Banking Procedures, Board terms of office, and Adopt a Highway.

November 11 F.O.R. San Bernard members enjoyed a F.O.R. Fellowship Evening, held on the outdoor patio area at Dido's Restaurant. Door prizes, drawings, food, fun, music and dancing was enjoyed by all. A gift basket  of various F.O.R. items was presented to Pete and Sue Smirch, in appreciation for hosting the November 11 party.

November 13 F.O.R. Merchandise Design Team, Judy Burnett, Peggy Davidson,Jeanette Swatloski and Gloria Powell created Christmas window displays at Quality Power Products in Brazoria. Props and other display items were loaned, for this usage, by several F.O.R. members.

November 15 F.O.R.'s Evironmental Chairman, Fred Kanter and C.A.P.'s members Vanessa Taylor and Bruce Barner attended the quarterly C.A.P.'s meeting presented by Conoco-Phillips Petroleum Co. Discussion was on a MTBE leak that occurred on 217 tank, located at the Sweeny Tank Farm, Old Ocean Refinery.

November 15 F.O.R.'s President, Pat Webb, on behalf of Friends Of the River, presented a check to Mark Hanson, Director of Brazoria County Parks Dept., for the purchase of new lighting at public boat ramps on the river. November 14 F.O.R.'s River Mouth Chairman, Roy Edwards, was invited to speak to the Shady Acres community, concerning river mouth issues. The presentation was held at the Shady Acres Baptist Church, approx. 30 in attendance.

November 16  Parade meeting, held at Dido's.

November 19 Several F.O.R. members and River Mouth Chairman, Roy Edwards, attended the GLO meeting held at Stahlman Park in Surfside. Subjects discussed were: housing on the public beach, beach restoration, sand sources.

November 20 A new highway Banner was put in place in Brazoria, in anticipation of the 20th Annual Christmas Boat Parade and Home Decorating Contest.

November 30 Parade meeting, held at Dido's.

Any organization is only as strong as the resolve of it's members and supporters.
If you'd like to help us in helping the San Bernard River, there are a many options open to individuals and companies. Whether it's time, expertise or something else you can offer, we need your contribution.

Clean Team

Work continues with the GLO for removal of the sunken Spirit C and a barge located at River's End. Salvage date to be set, most likely for January or February 2007.
 
The grant for reconstruction of the boat ramp/dock facilities at Hwy. 35 has been submitted, according to a report from Mark Hanson, Director of Brazoria County Parks Dept. Announcements should be made in January, for a possible start date.
 
Upriver watershed issue's are being researched.
 
F.O.R San Bernard's Spring Clean date tentatively set for April 28, 2007

F.O.R. San Bernard's Parade Committee was very, very active in November, in preparation of the 20th Annual Christmas Boat Parade and Home Decorating Contest. Many hours of work is involved by F.O.R.'s Chairwoman, Vanessa Taylor, CEO Nelson Taylor, the parade committee and volunteers, to help make this a successful and special event for all.
