Birds of a Feather Stick Together
Friday night at the F.O.R. Community Center,
friends put on a pot of coffee, made some iced
tea and laid out some cookies, cakes, shrimp
dip, crackers and cheese and then greeted 27
people who wanted to learn more about the birds
in the area.
David Plunkett, President of the Brazosport
Birders and Naturalists, arrived with his slides
of birds and his display for the upcoming
Migration Celebration (April 11th, 12th and 13th
at the San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge) and
proceeded to regale the group with pictures and
tips about birding in Brazoria County. David
told the group that most of his pictures were of
larger birds – because they moved slower, and
therefore were easier to capture with the lens
of a camera. There were some pretty spectacular
pictures – from Painted Buntings to Great Blue
Herons and even some rare birds you hope to be
lucky enough to someday see.
David also touched on what kind of equipment you
would need to take up serious bird watching, and
showed us his favorite field guides (the
National Geographic Birds of North America was
his favorite). Since Brazoria County sits on the
edge of the eastern and western flyways, we get
a larger variety of birds in our county than
most states get and that means you need a
species guide book that covers both areas. He
also left us some Brazoria Co. Bird check lists
and maps which show where to find birds in
Brazoria Co. So, if you weren’t able to attend,
we have a limited supply available if you
contact Pat Webb at: pat@sanbernardriver.com
And good news, neighbors! Even if you were not
able to attend, you still may be able to benefit
from David’s talk. He has promised to write a
post for us outlining little tips to good bird
watching and his favorite place to go to bird
watch in the county. So, look for that in the
near future on this site.
So, it looks like the first Community Center
event was a success. You can start looking
forward to events around the third Friday of
every other month at the F.O.R. Community
Center. The next presentation is scheduled to be
Friday, April 18 and the topic is still under
investigation. If you have any topic you would
like to see addressed, please contact Pat Webb.
So, until we next see you all, neighbors, help
make it a great day in the neighborhood!
