RIVER MOUTH NEWS !!!!

F.O.R. was privileged to be invited to participate at the national conference of the American Shore & Beach Preservation Association held at the Galveston Convention Center, Tuesday, October 23, 2007. The conference was co-sponsored by the Texas General Land Office.

Members of F.O.R. arrived in Galveston at about 5 p.m. And toured the various booths, talking to the representatives of participating vendors. Represented were research companies, dredging organizations, sand movers, Geo Tube manufacturers, dune restoration experts and others. A large stack of informational materials was added to the F.O.R. Reference library.

The most interesting conversation was a 20 minute round table with the Woods Hole Group - most of whose research and development is ocean-related. They were very interested in the San Bernard River status.

Donald “Dude” Payne introduced the F.O.R. Members to Texas State Senator Mike Jackson, who represents parts of Matagorda, Brazoria and Galveston Counties among other areas. Senator Jackson was awarded the Coastal Stewardship Award by the GLO at the dinner for his efforts and leadership that have made a lasting and significant contribution to the betterment of the Texas Gulf Coast. F.O.R. Spoke one-on-one with Senator Jackson for about 15 minutes. He expressed great interest in beach and coastal problems throughout the central coast and asked for additional information on the San Bernard River. He also stated that a boat tour to the gates of the Brazos and the San Bernard sand spit was something that he would like to do. A presentation booklet has been mailed to him.

At the awards dinner, our own Donald “Dude” Payne (Brazoria County Commissioner, Pct. 1) was awarded The Local Government Award by the Texas General Land Office. This award is given to a local elected official who has taken the time to not only understand coastal issues and challenges, but to bring together diverse constituencies with state and federal partners. Please join F.O.R.  in congratulating “Dude” on this accomplishment! The river sings your praise.

C.E.P.R.A.  funding was also announced at the ASPBA/GLO Conference. The major projects funded were Galveston Island (with a project of 3 miles of beach restoration utilizing 1 million cubic yards of sand), Surfside Beach, and Sylvan Beach. Thursday, October 25, 2007, the GLO confirmed that $50,000.00 for the San Bernard River Sand Source Investigation as submitted by the Brazoria Co. Beach Restoration Task Force had also been funded through this cycle of C.E.P.R.A. Funding. A formal announcement detailing the winning projects can be expected in the near future. Additional funding through C.I.A.P.  For the San Bernard River mouth is still pending.
