Special Guest:
James Drury
Of
The Virginian
|

NBC
- 90 minutes
September 16, 1962 - September 9,
1970
225 episodes
Music created by Percy Faith
introduced us to the debut of TV's
first ninety-minute Western series
in 1962 - a version of Owen Wister's
classic 1902 novel of the same name.
In 1958 James Drury first appeared
as The Virginian in an
episode of the 'short lived' pilot.
Things did not look promising at
that time. But then, on September
16, 1962, James Drury made his
second appearance as
The Virginian - and the series
was off and running. There were
about 75 actors all after the same
role. Lucky for us, James Drury was
chosen to be "our hero" ! The series
was set in the 1890's, based in and
around Medicine Bow, Wyoming. Each
75 minute segment was filmed in
eight days, with two shows often
being shot back-to-back. I'm sure
there are many of us who remember
settling down in the evening,
awaiting the suspense and excitement
that James Drury gave us in his role
as The Virginian.
As most of you now have your
favorite T.V. shows that, no matter
what, you just do not miss-
well, many of us felt the same way
about The Virginian.
Members of F.O.R. San Bernard had
the opportunity to meet and talk
with Mr. Drury earlier this year,
at Brazoria County Day,
held in Austin. Many people gathered
around him, to tell him of their
memories of the show, and which
"episode" was their personal
favorite. We also got to know a
little bit about James, the man,
that day. We learned that the San
Bernard River held special memories
for him, and that he spent a lot of
time, fishing the San Bernard, in
his younger days. He has also been a
part of Cowboy Talk, a
movie by Tommy Worrell, of
the Poole Ranch on the San Bernard
River.
Roy and Jan visited with James again
at a local fundraiser and when Roy
invited him to the 2007 River Raiser
fundraiser, Jim did not hesitate - a
true cowboy always knows his mind
and has no trouble expressing it -
he would be honored to be a part of
our day and would look forward to
meeting and getting to know more
Friends Of the River members.
Autographed photo proceeds will be
donated to the 2007 River Raiser.
Thank you, Mr. James Drury, you are
a true Friend Of the River!

RIVER MOUTH
NEWS !!!!
F.O.R. was
privileged
to be
invited to
participate
at the
national
conference
of the
American
Shore &
Beach
Preservation
Association
held at the
Galveston
Convention
Center,
Tuesday,
October 23,
2007. The
conference
was
co-sponsored
by the
Texas
General Land
Office.
Members of
F.O.R.
arrived in
Galveston at
about 5 p.m.
And toured
the various
booths,
talking to
the
representatives
of
participating
vendors.
Represented
were
research
companies,
dredging
organizations,
sand movers,
Geo Tube
manufacturers,
dune
restoration
experts and
others. A
large stack
of
informational
materials
was added to
the F.O.R.
Reference
library.
The most
interesting
conversation
was a 20
minute round
table with
the
Woods Hole
Group -
most of
whose
research and
development
is
ocean-related.
They were
very
interested
in the San
Bernard
River
status.
Donald
“Dude” Payne
introduced
the F.O.R.
Members to
Texas State
Senator Mike
Jackson, who
represents
parts of
Matagorda,
Brazoria and
Galveston

among other
areas.
Senator
Jackson was
awarded the

made a
lasting and
significant
contribution
to the
betterment
of the Texas
Gulf Coast.
F.O.R. Spoke
one-on-one
with Senator
Jackson for
about 15
minutes. He
expressed
great
interest in
beach and
coastal
problems
throughout
the central
coast and
asked for
additional
information
on the San
Bernard
River. He
also stated
that a boat
tour to the
gates of the
Brazos and
the San
Bernard sand
spit was
something
that he
would like
to do. A
presentation
booklet has
been mailed
to him.
At
the awards
dinner, our
own Donald
“Dude” Payne
(Brazoria
County

Pct. 1) was
awarded
The Local

This award
is given to
a local
elected
official who
has taken
the time to
not only
understand
coastal
issues and
challenges,
but to bring
together
diverse

Please join
F.O.R. in
congratulating
“Dude” on
this
