Where Are The Headwaters of the San Bernard?

By Larry Vacek

The headwaters of the river begin in a small pond in a field just west of New Ulm, Texas. To get there, turn west off Highway 1090 onto Walnut St. And continue west for approximately one quarter mile.

Just after crossing the railroad tracks, and located off the north shoulder of the road, is a pond. This is the source of the San Bernard River.

At this point, the river crosses under the road, through three large culverts and continues south through a pasture.

About  2.5 miles downstream, west of Highway 1090, off Bernard St. I took the second series of pictures of the river. At this location there is water in the river, but I did not detect a flow.

This last series of pictures is taken at the river bridge on Highway 60, 2.5 miles west of Highway 36 @ Wallis. At this location the river is flowing with a certain amount of clarity.

As the river flows to the sea, it gathers more water through additional springs and run-off until it becomes the river we see here in Brazoria County.

One of F.O.R.'s primary functions is to educate the public regarding the issues concerning the San Bernard River and it's Communities. Contact Pat Webb pat@sanbernardriver.com to schedule a guest speaker for your group or special event.
