F.O.R.'s Adopt A Highway October Clean Team

Thursday, October 4,  F.O.R. San Bernard's Adopt A Highway October Clean Team pampered our adopted highway F.M. 2918 with a good fall cleaning. The team all rolled out of bed early and met at Bernard Grocery at 9 a.m. To get their safety lesson, safety vests, trash bags, trash gigs (the gigs are normally engaged as  Flounder gigs – hey, when you live around water, you use what you have) – and to get their marching orders.

The October Adopt A Highway Clean Team consisted of the following volunteers:

Pat (the fearless leader) and Connie Webb

            Gloria Powell

Valroy and Adelia Maudlin

Judy Burnett

Roy and Jan Edwards

Mark Hazelrigg

After instructions, from Pat, this clean up's " Project Manager",  the Team left Bernard Grocery and reassembled at the electric substation on F.M. 2918 at C.R. 306. From there, Valroy, Adelia, Judy and Mark (2 people for each side of the highway) backtracked to the beginning of F.O.R.’s 2 miles of adopted highway – and Gloria, Roy, Jan and Connie went to the end  of the adopted section of highway to start the clean up. The teams all cleaned to meet in the middle – the idea being each team would clean 1 mile of highway. Meanwhile, Pat drove his pick-up along the route to pick up trash, load up the full trash bags and to distribute water for the team.

F.O.R.’s commitment  to TxDOT is quarterly cleaning of 2 miles of highway – this was the first clean-up. It  was timed to follow the regularly scheduled County’s mowing (which happened Monday/Tuesday of last week). Thank you Brazoria County – not one shaky-tailed critter was encountered during the successful clean-up. The team picked up a lot of plastic bottles, and aluminum cans among other assorted trash. Connie even picked up a dollar bill – which made the rest of the team look even harder for that illusive trash! If you did not have a chance to help out with this clean up – have no fear. Just watch for the next quarterly clean-up and sign up!

The weather for the initial clean-up could not have been better!  The team worked with willing hands and happy hearts and a lot of good was accomplished for the community – not to mention the trash picked up that won’t be in the river for the spring clean up. It was a good day in the neighborhood!

F.O.R.'s  Adopt A Highway program is seeking a full-time Project Manager. Please contact Pat if you are interested, or would like more information. The next highway clean up will be early spring. pat@sanbernardriver.com
