We will
restore, protect, promote and ensure a clean,
healthy, flowing San Bernard River for the sanity and
enjoyment of present and future generations.

Spring Brings an “Earthy” Clean on the San Bernard
The last couple of
weeks Earth Day (at Brazos Bend State Park),
the Migration Celebration (at San Bernard National
Wildlife Refuge), and Envirofest (at Brazos Mall)
have all celebrated Mother Earth and the new life, hope and
joy that Spring time brings. Friends Of the River San
Bernard has had booths at all those events and has
introduced attendees to our wonderful river and what this
community of friends stands for. We made some new friends
and educated some good folks at all the events.

But, in addition to
the new friends F. O. R. made at the environmental
events listed above, the Heavy Debris Clean-up Team
began the real work of cleaning up the river on Friday,
April 20 (continued Monday, April 23). The team that
collected over 4,000 pounds (remember, Holeman and Emily
helped David Pope clean about 1,200 pounds of trash out of
the river earlier this year –total to date – 5,200 pounds)
of heavy debris on April 20 was: David Pope, Darrell Powell,
David Hooker, Roy Edwards, Mack Minshew, Bob Bailey, Nelson
Taylor, Bob Bartosh, Larry Vacek and Tommy Davidson. In
addition, the team had some help at River’s End from Gene
Davis, who owned the property that was used to recover the
large fiberglass tank recovered from the river.

More debris was
brought in on boats and Roy Edwards’ floating dock which
doubled as a trash barge for the Heavy Debris Clean-up.

Sincere thanks go
out to BEARS (owner/operator, Kenny McGehee), who
donated the use of the dumpsters for the clean up event;
Republic Waste (Steve Carroll, owner) who donated the
disposal of the debris for the clean-up, and 2J’s Café
and Marina who allowed us to put a large dumpster on
their property for this event. Thanks also go out to
ConocoPhillips, who donated the t-shirts and the trash
bags; and to Brazoria Councilman, Terry Brown, who donated
the cases of water for the April 28th event.
But, there is still
more cleaning to be done. Monday, April 23, is another heavy
debris collection day, and we understand that Peggy Davidson
has offered to serve lunch that day for the team volunteers
(you don’t want to miss that, folks).

The last planning meeting for the April 28th
event will be 7:00 p.m., April 26th at Dido’s.
And, of course,
EVERYONE is invited for the main event, Saturday,
April 28. From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Bring your boats, bug
spray, sun screen, gloves and a willingness to help to one
of the 5 collection sites where you can join up along the 26

can sign a release form; get a Clean-Team t-shirt,
some trash bags and some water or soft drink refreshment.
These sites are the Hanson Riverside County Park @
Hwy. 35; the public boat ramps at F.M. 521; F.M. 2611 and
the end of F.M. 2918; and 2J’s Café and Marina off of
F.M. 2918. There will be
an appreciation dinner for those participating in the April
28th event directly after the clean-up from 4 p.m. – 6:00
