We will
restore, protect, promote and ensure a clean,
healthy, flowing San Bernard River for the sanity and
enjoyment of present and future generations.

Time for a Little Heavy Lifting!

Friends Of the
River (F.O.R.) San Bernard
are busy “pumping up” for their annual spring cleaning of
the San Bernard which will be held Saturday, April 28, 2007
(from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) by holding a pair of
pre-cleaning, Heavy Debris Clean-up Days on Friday,
April 20th and Monday, April 23rd. The
purpose of these 2 days is to remove as much heavy debris
(refrigerators, washing machines, water heaters, truck
tires, parts of old cars, etc.) from the river as possible
so the general public can concentrate on cleaning up more of
the every day trash (plastic bags, drink cans, Styrofoam
containers, etc.) that ends up in the river.
The Heavy Debris
Days are
scheduled during the week because the lighter boat traffic
helps the crews be able to gather, transport and unload the
large, bulky objects at the collection sites safely. This
year, F.O.R. has scheduled 2 days (before they only had one)
for heavy debris recovery because last year (when the entire
clean-up recovered 26,000 pounds of trash out of the river),
the heavy debris crews ran out of time before they ran out
of debris to collect.
Not everyone can
assist with the collection of heavy debris, but people
interested in helping on either one – or both - of the Heavy
Debris Days should be at the F.M. 2611 bridge boat ramp at
9:00 a.m. to discuss trash collection sites and plans for
the day. Volunteers should bring their boats (if they have
them), just themselves (if they don’t have a boat), gloves,
bug spray, strong backs, and a willingness to help.
Volunteers for the Heavy Debris Days will be given a
green cap to identify them as part of the clean-up crew.
Those wishing to
help out with the Clean-up on Saturday, April 28 should meet
the F.O.R. Zone Captains at one of the following boat ramps
(which double as collection sites) : Hanson Riverside County
Park, McNeil Bridge (F.M. 521), Churchill Bridge (F.M.
2611), 2J’s Café and Maraina, or River’s End (the end
of F.M. 2918). When they sign a release, they will be given
a green t-shirt donated by Conoco-Phillips, some soft
drink refreshment and trash bags. There will be a
complimentary Appreciation dinner for those participating in
the April 28th event directly after the clean-up
from 4 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. at 2909 C.R. 604.
