News from River
Mouth Committee Chairman- Roy Edwards
The Gulf
Intracoastal Canal Association (GICA) is the
governing authority for commercial barge
traffic on the Gulf Coast from Florida to
the Rio Grande. One of the most pressing
problems on the entire Intracoastal Canal is
the currents at the west gate of the Brazos
River, which have become steadily worse as
the mouth of the San Bernard River closed.
The GICA is actively petitioning policy
makers at both the state and federal levels
to correct these issues.
As you
know, F.O.R. members Dr. Robin Hardwicke and
Keith Hardwicke recently made a trip to
Washington, D.C. to speak about the San
Bernard with Assistant Secretary of the
Army, John Paul Woodley, Jr. along with Tom
Lizardo, chief of staff for Congressman Ron
Paul. Their trip was followed by Raymond
Butler, Executive Director of the GICA. Mr.
Butler took the attached document to
Washington to lobby for help in remedying
the navigation problems at the west gate of
the Brazos caused by the closure of the San
Bernard River and the fact that its flow
must exit through the Brazos River Diversion
Canal to get to the Gulf.
