Attention Offshore Fishermen!
Texas is working to build a 160 acre reef off Freeport, within 8 miles of the shore. We understand a site on the banks of the San Bernard River at River's End has been secured and will be used as a staging area for reefing materials, according to information we received. We also understand that approximately 43 tractor-trailer loads of concrete reefing materials will be delivered to that site.
The director of this Texas Parks and Wildlife Program is Paul C. Hammerschmidt. You can contact him at: paul.hammerschmidt@TPWD.state.tx.us.
The official Texas Parks and Wildlife website for this project is: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/water/habitats/artificial_reef/public_reef_building.phtml
Remember, when the mouth of the river is opened, access to this potentially fantastic fishing hole will become even easier.
Chester Moore wrote an article on this topic in the December 2006Texas Fish and Game Magazine. You can read more about the reef at: www.texasgreatbarrierreef.com.
Exerpt from article : TGBRP will be done in 3 phases; Phase 1 will include the segments between Galveston and Freeport, and Port Aransas to Port Oconnor. Second phase will include the segments between Galveston and Sabine Pass and Freeport to Port Oconnor. Third phase will extend from Port Oconnor to Port Isabel. Projected time frame for initial reef deployments; Spring 2007. The TGBR has applied for $5 Million/year in CIAP Funding, which, if approved, will be distributed in Spring 2007.
